Get Ready to Work
We blast some music on the stereo system and then begin our stretches. Have a high energy feel in the room before we get going. Then we will do some light stretching and either sprint some laps around the mat or jump rope. We want to get the muscles warm and loose to get the most from the rest of the workout.
Working on the Punching Bags
Now its time to hit stuff! We glove up and get ready to go. At WFC we have a bag area with 30 boxing bags, so everyone in class can have their own. Hammering the crap out of a bag and acting like its your boss or ex is a great stress reducer. The instructor will show you a combo that you will do for the whole round and try to get it right before you get too tired. Then between the round you’ll catch a quick breather, just long enough to show you the next round’s combination. After a couple of classes you will begin to appear like you know what you are doing. You’ll most likely seem a bit uncoordinated and off base in the first session, no matter what your fitness level. Because the difficult techniques will be different for your muscles, not just your brain. Though the combinations usually are made up of relatively basic combos, when all is said and done, it is a technique that gets easier with time. Plan to give yourself 3 or 4 sessions before you feel comfortable with the movements. All workouts blend the same general moves in a different order or portion of the combo.
Pad work
Now we do partner drills. Don’t worry you’re not attacking each other but you will hold pads or focus mitts for one another. Now you get to imitate a trainer holding pads for his fighter then change off and end up being the fighter striking the pads. Don’t get discouraged either, just like it takes a few classes to feel balanced and smooth striking the mitts and bags, the same thing can be said for getting to know how to hold pads. By your 2nd or 3rd workout it will be a no-brainer for you.
Time for Abs
Time for abdominals, even though without realizing it you’ve been training your core the entire workout, corkscrewing your body on punches and kicking. However, a complete kickboxing workout should include training the stomache and back muscles through such exercise as leg raises, bicycles, and side planks. All strength comes from your core so this work will help you out in future workouts.
