The ways to effectively punch, kick, and knee to maximize power and speed. You don’t ever box with another student in our Women’s Only kickboxing classes so you’ll never need to think about getting hit. Let me give you the tour of a kickboxing class at Westchester MMA.
Warm Up Routine
Our class starts with high energy music, whatever we feel like that day, Rock, EDM, or some 90′s pop. We need to get the atmosphere and energy level up to start. Then we’ll do some light stretching and either run some laps around the gym or jump rope. We sweat and elevate your heart rate in order to get the most from your training and help minimize the risk of injury.
Time to De-stress
Its time to hit stuff! We glove up and get ready to go. Our bag area holds 30 heavy bags, this isn’t a taebo class, you need to feel your fist move something when you throw a blow. Boxing is a great stress reliever. There’s nothing more relaxing then winding up and smashing a boxing bag as hard as you can and placing life’s drama on mute for the hour of class. We aren’t just striking the boxing bag aimlessly, the teacher will take you through many combos working with punches, knees, and kicks. You’ll most likely seem a bit uncoordinated and off base in your first session, no matter what your fitness level. Considering that the difficult combos will be different for your muscles, not just your brain. Though the combos usually are comprised of relatively basic combinations, when all is said and done, it is a technique that improves with time. Plan to give your body 3 or 4 sessions before you feel like you know the techniques. Many classes combine the same general movements in a different order or portion of the combination.
Partner Up
When we finish with the punching bags we switch it up and will have you pair up with another member in class. Now we do partner exercises with one girl holding punching pads while the other is punching, kicking, bobbing, and weaving. Newer students will have much easier combos while our students that have been with us longer have more advanced combinations. In your very first session you will see that holding mitts isn’t a break. Its nearly just as challenging as punching them.
Core Training and Calisthenics
Time for Abs, even though without knowing it you’ve been training your core the whole session, twisting your form on punches and kicking. Even so, a complete kickboxing workout should include working the stomache and lower back muscles through workouts as leg raises, sit ups, and side planks. All power comes from your core so these exercises will help you out in future sessions.

And your first training session is done. Some light stretching and some words of encouragement from your fellow students for pushing it through your first of many classes here at WFC. a full class of kickboxing burns more calories then lifting weights, jogging on a treadmill machine , or riding a bike.
