Warm Up Routine
Our class starts with high energy music, whatever we are in the mood for that day, Rock, EDM, or some 90′s pop. We need to get the mood and energy level up to get started. Then we will do some light stretching and either sprint some laps around the mat or jump rope. We sweat and elevate your heart rate in order to get the most out of your training and help reduce the chances of injury.
Right now we strap up our boxing gloves and start hitting stuff. At Westchester MMA we have a bag mat with 30 bags, so every person in class can have their own. Hitting bags is the best stress reliever. There’s nothing more fun then winding up and hitting a heavy bag as hard as you can and turning life’s issues on the back burner for the hour of class. We aren’t just striking the boxing bag aimlessly, the trainer will take you through different types of combinations using punches, knees, and kicks. You’ll most likely feel a bit uncoordinated and off base in your first workout, regardless of your fitness level. Since the challenging combos will be different for your muscles, not just your brain. Though the combos usually are made up of pretty basic combos, when all is said and done, it is a routine that improves with time. Plan to give yourself 3 or 4 sessions before you feel like you know the movements. Many routines blend the same basic movements in a different order or part of the combination.
At this point we have the class split up. Its not to make you square off with one another, now will hold pads for each other. Now you and your workout buddy will appear to be a coach and their boxer, and you will get to switch and play both roles. Don’t get discouraged either, just like it takes a few classes to feel balanced and smooth punching the mitts and bags, the same thing can be said for getting to know how to hold pads. By your second or 3rd kickboxing class it will be a piece of cake for you.

The core of your body, which includes the abdominals and lower back muscles, will get an unintended workout just by doing the boxing and kicking exercises. Right now we do some core exercises. planking, sit ups, and russian twists, all fun stuff. All power stems from your core so this work will help you out in future classes.
We end our sessions with some stretching and high fives for finishing strong. In an hour of kickboxing class you burned more calories than you could jogging on a treadmill , stationary bike, or lifting weights.
