Tips on how to effectively punch, kick, and knee to maximize power and speed. You never box with another member in our Women’s Only kickboxing classes so you’ll never need to think about getting hit. I will give you a rundown of a typical class here at Westchester Cardio Kickboxing.
Warm up and Stretching
We blast some music on the speakers and then start our warmup. Get a high energy vibe in the bag rack before we start. Then we’ll do some light stretching and either jog some laps around the gym or jump rope. We want to get the muscles warm and loose in order to get the most from the rest of the workout.
Working on the Boxing Bags
Now its time to punch stuff! We glove up and get ready to go. At Westchester Cardio Kickboxing we have a bag mat with 30 bags, so everyone in class can have their own. Punching is a great stress reliever. There’s nothing more fun then winding up and punching a punching bag as hard as you can and placing life’s issues on mute for the hour of class. The teacher will show you a combination that you will work on for the entire round and try to perfect before you get too tired. Then after the round you’ll catch a quick breather, just long enough to teach the next round’s combo. After a couple of classes you will begin to look like you know how to kick some butt. You will probably seem a bit uncoordinated and off balance in the first class, regardless of your fitness level. Since the challenging combos will be different for your muscles, not just your brain. Though the combinations usually are comprised of basic combos, when all is said and done, it is a routine that improves with practice. Plan to give yourself 3 or 4 sessions before you feel comfortable with the movements. Many classes mix the same standard techniques in a different order or part of the combination.
Following a few rounds on the boxing bags we then partner you and give you boxing pads or a kick shield. One student will hold pads for the other. New students will have simpler combos while our girls that have been with us longer have more advanced combinations. In your very first workout you will realize that holding for a partner isn’t a break. Its pretty much just as tough as punching them.
Core Training and Calisthenics
The entire body mechanics of throwing a punch or kick already gives you an amazing ab and core workout. In our workouts we still make time to isolate our core and do some abdominal movements. To get you ready for summertime we’ll do all different exercises to help you get back in that swimsuit.
At the end we will have each student grab a set of dumbbells and do shoulder, arms, and lower body exercises. This is a great way to build up some muscle while forcing your body to burn some extra calories. Putting weights into the routine is going to make all the difference when it comes to getting a toned body Pounding on the boxing bag and holding pads already have your arms cooked but there is no stopping now if you want tight and defined shoulders, back, and arms.
